Big Deng meets Little Deng: School who raised $100 for John Mac Foundation gets a visit
Posted on January 29, 2017
Before Christmas, a $100 donation was made to the John Mac Foundation in the name of Jacinta. We were grateful for it, as we are for any donation, no matter how big or small, and went about our day.
Then a letter arrived in the mail from Lyons Early Childhood School in Canberra. Jacinta was a teacher there, and had read Deng’s book. She explained to her young students about Deng’s journey from a child soldier in South Sudan, to a criminal lawyer in Western Sydney. It just so happened there was a little in boy in her class also named Deng, also from South Sudan.
The class decided they wanted to raise some money for Deng’s foundation. So they spent time making arts and crafts, and held an art sale. Their teacher donated the proceeds via our website, and wrote a letter to us with a photo of the children’s hands.
When Deng read the letter, he immediately decided to go to the school to say thank you in person. So on the 24th of January, big Deng met little Deng, and lots of other students and teachers at Lyons Early Childhood School. Thanks everyone, we at the John Mac Foundation are so grateful for your kind and selfless donation!
